Botox or fillers? What's the difference? (All4Women - 1 October 2008)

I often get the question when dealing with patients: So what are  Botox and Fillers for? Or I have a situation when Botox is asked for, but a patient would benefit more from a filler. I am going to try and simplify and clarify where and when to use what:

Chemical Peels show great advancements (All4Women - 19 October 2008)

A few decades ago, and now and again on Extreme Makeover kind of productions, we saw chemical peels that caused a raw, oozing result that required a woman to be indoors for two weeks. Fortunately that is no longer the case.

Chemical peels give you a glowing complexion.

What do laser treatments do?
An Laser or IPL treatment gives the skin a controlled burn which facilitates the removal of the outer layers of skin which harbour the wrinkles and sun damage, scarring, pigmentation and broken capillaries. Carboxy Therapy under the spot light.

Clinic reju is sponsoring the treatment of Mr Solly Starkowitz from Polokwane for Damon Beard's Big Favour.

History:

Mr Starkowits suffers from poor circulation primarily due to smoking most of his life. He has had bilateral bypasses with stents in both legs. He started having signs of gangrene in the right foot and was told he should amputate the leg. He went for prayer and felt an improvement after which his granddaughter heard about the treatment we offered and called in.

To be honest, Mr Starkowitz's foot is in jeopardy and we started treatment knowing that there is little chance of recovery, but he was willing to give it a try. We have now gone 3 weeks past his amputation date and he is walking on the foot, and we are hoping and praying with him that the amputation will not be necessary.

Why does smoking cause amputation?

Mostly patients will joke with embarrassment about this habit that is so hard to break and I always wonder whether if they had known they were choosing between their legs and the habit, if they would have chosen the same. Most leave the habit immediately when they realise that continuing to smoke will cost them their legs, their ability to walk, to work or even their life.

Smoking physically causes spasm in the arteries - especially the fine ones supplying the tissues with oxygen and this spasm can last up to 12 hours which means a smoke in the morning and a smoke at night closes off blood supply for the whole day. Not only do blood vessels go into spasm but platelets tend to clot more easily leading to a predisposition to blockages in the arteries.  This process over time destroys the blood supply to the legs and thereby leads to amputation.

Vascular surgery helps in the sense that a bypass graft or stent can provide the supply of blood into the leg, but the problem in the microvascular structures is not rectified. This is where Carboxy therapy can provide a solution.

If you are suffering from symptoms of poor circulation please call : 031 561 6620 for an assessment to see if the treatment can be of assistance in your case.

On a the research side:

We are looking for  female patients/ couples to do a clinical trial on carboxy therapy for Vaginal Rejuvenation.

You will be required to complete the treatments and give feedback as to results - but this will be anonymous.

This treatment is under the spotlight currently for vaginal rejuvenation and up to now patients are reporting the following results:

Improvement cosmetically, better response to stimulation, improved lubrication and sensation as well as improved orgasms that had become quite mild to the point of being bland.

For the men the following results have been reported:

Improved sensation, improved size and function.

Treatment consists of 4-5 micro injections around  the labia or penis, and takes around 5 minutes to do. Patients experience a feeling like water running into the tissues,  and it can be mildly uncomfortable, but not painful, and not terribly invasive.

Couples would usually do 4 sessions and be asked to fill in some forms before the treatment and then after.  No side effects besides mild discomfort during time of treatment and mild bruising due to the micro-injections.  We are needing data for international research and would appreciate any women/ couples that are available - at this point in any age group.

Please contact Reception and ask for a consultation with Dr Liesl Roome, and we will then discuss the treatment further at the time of this consultation.
